2020 Conference Theme: REVOLUTIONS
From the records spinning on the turntables to demands for political change spit through the mic, revolution has been a crucial component in the development of hip hop culture’s aesthetics and politics. What revolutionary changes have occurred in music, art, business, fashion, or politics after rap music began to seize the airwaves 40 years ago? What revolutions are yet to come and what role will hip hop play in bringing those changes about?
The sixth annual Hip Hop Studies Conference at Allen University invites proposals for presentations on research projects from any discipline that focus on hip hop music and culture. Proposals relevant to the conference theme will be given priority, but research projects that focus on any aspect of hip hop art and culture are welcome. Suggested topics include:
The conference will include panel presentations, workshops, and a keynote address by Professor Griff, founding member of revolutionary rap group Public Enemy.
To Apply: Please send a 250-word proposal to [email protected] by March 6, 2020. Proposals for pre-formed panels or individual presentations are both welcome. Panels involving performance and proposals for posters or art works to be displayed at the conference are also welcome.
Registration: $25 faculty/$20 students (lunch and snacks for registered conference participants will be provided).
